Legendary actor Shammi Kapoor passed into the ages on Sunday (14-Aug-2011) morning. He was 79.

The original rockstar and perhaps the only real rebel, might have succumbed to renal failure, but Shammi Kapoor's silver screen journey is immmortal.

Years of hard struggle, patient perseverance and even hard-hitting brickbats created the "Shammi Kapoor phenomenon" which is remembered by his fans even after he bade adieu to the silver screen.

Amitabh Bachchan, who worked with Shammi in the 1991 film 'Ajooba', said, "Shammi Kapoorji passed away this morning at 5:15 am. Rushing there now. The flamboyance and 'joie de vivre' of the Industry lost!. An entire life full of optimism and happy spirit, caring loving to all. Now suddenly silent."

Expressing grief over the death of veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar remembered him as a "cheerful and courageous" person.

"I am saddened with the death of Shammi Kapoorji. He was a big star of the film industry and also a very good human being. He was very lively person... courageous, faced all difficulties very bravely," Lata said on micro-blogging site twitter.

South Indian superstar Rajinikanth paid tribute to the legendary Shammi Kapoor, who passed away in the early hours of Sunday.

"I am a great admirer and a huge fan of Shammiji. His energy on screen is a treat to watch and I have loved every bit of it. His demise is a huge loss to the film industry and fraternity and mainly to his millions of fans. I convey my heartfelt condolences to all in his family. O Mere Sona, you will always live in our hearts," Rajni said.

Sharmila Tagore and Saira Banu who made their Bollywood debuts with Shammi Kapoor in 'Kashmir Ki Kali' and 'Junglee' respectively said they will miss the star who was "high spirited and so full of life".

Aditya Raj Kapoor, the son of legendary actor Shammi Kapoor who passed away this morning, described his father as a happy person who lived life to the fullest.

"He was a very happy and lively person. He was unwell for sometime...he was on dialysis. He died of kidney failure," Aditya told reporters outside Kapoor's residence at Malabar Hill in south Mumbai.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also condoled the death of the veteran Bolywood actor.

"I am sad to learn of Shammi Kapoor's demise. He was an accomplished actor who entertained millions and millions of fans in India and abroad. I share his family's grief," Manmohan Singh was quoted in an official statement.
