A 10-year-old boy and two others were killed in a clash between police and protestors in Guwahati, Assam on Wednesday, June 22.

The agitators torched city buses and private vehicles, threw stones at security personnel and damaged a number of vehicles near the State Secretariat.

A large number of protesters, including women, were armed with lathis which they used to damage vehicles. They threw stones, injuring journalists and policemen including City Senior Superintendent of Police Dipak Chouhdury and a Deputy Superintendent.

Admitting to intelligence failure in anticipating the large-scale violence which left three dead, the Assam government ordered a probe into the incident and has promised action within 3-4 days.

"Yes, there was failure of intelligence and police, the deputy commissioner failed to anticipate such large-scale violence," senior ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Rockybul Hussain said.

"The police and deputy commissioner failed to anticipate when they gave permission for the rally, but at the same time the rallyists have given assurance to the administration that it would be peaceful. This is also a breach of trust," Sarma said.
