An earthquake of moderate intensity hit North India on Monday (04-Apr-2011) evening. According to the Indian Meteorological Department the quake was of 5.7 magnitude on the richter scale.
The quake's epicenter was in Nepal and it occurred at around 17:01 HRS (IST).
The tremors were felt in the whole of North India including Delhi, Ghaziabad, Dehradun, Chandigarh and Jaipur.
Reports from Noida and Gurgaon and parts of Delhi said strong tremors were felt, with furniture shaking in buildings.
According to the Met department the earthquake occurred at 5:01 pm and lasted for about 3 seconds. As per the initial reports there were no damage to life and property and there was no need for panic according to the experts.

Nuclear plant safe

India's nuclear power reactors at the atomic power stations in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are safe. “The reactors (in Bulandshahr in U.P.) are safe and continue to operate safely,” N. Nagaich, Executive Director, Corporate Planning and Corporate Communication of Nuclear Power Corporation of India, told PTI. He also said the nuclear power reactors located at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan were also unaffected by the tremors.
