His fans have felt let down as he dabbled in making a film that they felt was not his cup of tea. Mainstream critics have torn the film apart, saying it lacks the essence of a thriller. However, the film, according to the trade, has taken a good opening mainly in multiplexes and since it is made on a shoestring budget (` 3.5 crore), will be profitable in its first week itself!

Understanding the pulse of the audiences and their criticisms, the director has come up with a press release that defends his film.

Gautham Menon, who has tried out making a new genre of film Nadunisi Naaygal, has said that he did so to break away from a particular style of filmmaking that he is used to. NN is not only an experimental film but a new age Tamil cinema that can be loved only by those who are fond of this genre of films.

When asked if he will ever do another film in the same genre, the filmmaker said, "I feel that I've pushed the envelope with this film. I stand by NN and as a filmmaker, I'd love doing films in various genres."
