Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday (28-Apr-2011) filed a defamation case against former AIADMK ministers O. Paneerselvam, K.A. Sengottaiyan and D. Jayakumar and legal wing secretary P.H. Manoj Pandian for their alleged disparaging remarks against him over attempt to destroy some important government files.

The city public prosecutor M. Shahjahan filed the defamation complaint on behalf of the chief minister before the principal sessions court.

Taking exception to AIADMK's allegation in a letter to the Election Commission, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had on April 25 charged the opposition party with spreading falsehood and said the government was in the process of initiating legal steps against it. In his complaint, the PP submitted that the AIADMK leaders in the letter to EC on April 24, which was published in newspapers, had claimed that the "caretaker" DMK Government had ordered shifting of various departments from the old secretariat at Fort St George to the new one at Omanduarar Government Estate with a view to destroying key files.

The complaint said the use of the word "caretaker government" itself amounts to making derogatory remarks against elected Chief Minister. Knowing this fully well, the AIADMK leaders had wantonly made disparaging remarks.

Even without understanding the basic concept of administration, the accused had made the disparaging remarks against the chief minister only to shatter the image in the eye of the public, Shahjahan added.
