Tamil Nadu chief minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalithaa, finally reacting to the arrest of DMK president M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi in connection with the 2G spectrum scam, said on Tuesday (24-May-2011) in Chennai that people's faith in judiciary has been restored.
"Finally, the law is taking its own course and action is being taken according to law. After a long time, people’s faith in the judicial system has been restored," she told reporters in Chennai.
On Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi's plea in the court for grant of bail as she was a woman, Jayalalithaa said, "It is a wrong argument. In politics you cannot expect any concession to be shown because you are a woman."
During Kanimozhi's bail plea hearing, her lawyer Ram Jethmalani had argued before the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in New Delhi that she should be granted bail as she was a woman and she was not involved in the day to day operations of Kalaignar TV.
Ms. Jayalalithaa, in a press conference in Chennai, was responding to questions over Kanimozhi's arrest in connection with the transfer of Rs 200 crore from 2G spectrum co-accused Shahid Balwa's DB Realty to Kalaignar TV, in which the DMK MP holds a 20 per cent stake.
Ms. Kanimozhi, arrested on May 20 in the 2G scam was denied bail by a trial court, following which she had moved the Delhi High Court.
On Karunanidhi defending his daughter, she said, "Only a court which is looking into the case where someone is included as an accused can decide whether she was innocent."
Kanimozhi has been in Tihar Jail since Friday (20-May-2011) last, when the special court hearing the 2G case ordered her immediate arrest while dismissing her bail application.
